The Belmont University Copyright Society is a group of individuals with a shared interest in exploring copyright law and the impact it has on not only the music industry, but also on society as a whole.  Students examine issues concerning copyright through discussion, current events, and lectures. BUCS specifically promotes the awareness of copyright law at Belmont University, and the surrounding Nashville community, through "awareness campaigns" and community projects.

There is a false assumption that copyright law only benefits the author of creative works by ensuring that they receive compensation. While copyright law does ensure the possibility of financial return, the author is not the only beneficiary.  Society, as a whole, progresses from this author's work, creativity, and innovation.  Copyright law provides incentives for authors to create just like patent law encourages inventions.  You can't protect an idea but you can an expression of that idea.  Copyright law is for the intangible progress that can't be touched, but just because it can't be touched doesn't mean it can't be felt.
